I love photography because it allows me to be creative at any time. Camerawork has been like a dependable friend I’ve taken to countless places for exploration and adventure.
My love for photography emerged during a college semester abroad, inspired by life on the French Riviera, and by the novelty of European travel. I ventured throughout France, Germany, Spain, England, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, taking countless photos with my first camera, a 35 mm Olympus point-and-shoot. With experiences like hitchhiking across England to see Stonehenge; knocking out a brick from the Berlin Wall; and seeing Europe’s most famous cities, artwork and sites, I came back to the US with an abundance of unique photos and travel stories. I enthusiastically shared them with family and friends, but didn’t pursue marketing my photos at that time. Photography took a backseat to finishing my degree and securing gainful employment, but remained a passion. In my late 20’s, I returned to Europe for a French refresher school in Germany, and was again inspired by the continent’s history, customs and culture to pick up my camera. I photographed the traditional raising of the Maypole in Bavaria, Germany; my two day journey in a rental car across Germany to Copenhagen; and the small-town charm of Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Unfortunately, the rebirth of my passion for photography coincided with the accidental drowning of my camera in a large beer stein at Munich’s Haufbrauhaus. Ironically, I never drank beer before this trip, but refused to trade my new taste for the death of my old friend – camerawork. I quickly procured another camera, using it for the remainder of my trip and for the next few years.
Eventually, I switched to digital photography, acquiring a Nikon SLR camera just before another trip to Europe in 2008. The plan for a five month stay morphed into a five year extended adventure, letting me expand my reach from previous trips. I photographed the Voie de la Liberte bicycle ride across Normandy, Venetian costume festivals, Paris’ Roland Garros tournament, Croatia’s Plitvice National Park, Norway’s fjords, Odessa’s coastline, and countless historical sites. I also journeyed outside Europe to Iceland, Japan and Africa, which became some of my favorite places to visit and photograph. Taking photos in the Kenyan Serengeti and Tanzanian national parks was the highlight of my photographic journeys. These images portray the culmination of 25 years of adventures, and are testimony to the respect and admiration I hold for nature and different cultures. They will tell you more “about me” than I ever could with words.
